FAQ

What is the function of the heated bed?

The heated bed heats up the building platform.  It helps the plastic to stick to the building surface and reduces warping during printing.

Is the LCD screen required for operation?

No, the LCD screen is not required for operation.  It shows information during printing like the temperatures and how far the print has progressed.  The only functionality it adds is to print from a SD card, which allows for off-line printing.  This is very useful when you have a laptop which does not stay next to your printer or you want to run multiple printers from 1 PC.

How long does it take to build this printer kit and how difficult is it?

It takes on average 1 day to build the printer, so it can easily be done over a weekend.  It is easy to assemble this kit, because the videos provided will show you step by step how to build your printer.  The videos will instruct you from the point where the box is opened till where you do your very first print.

Do I need to buy the software to control the printer separately?

No, the software used to control the printer is free open source software (Repetier-Host) and are downloaded from the internet.

Does the printer software work on other operating systems than Windows?

Yes, the software controlling the printer (Repetier-Host) works on Windows, Mac and Linux.  You must just download the version for your operating system.

How much can I print from 1 spool of filament?

This is always a very difficult question, because it totally depends on the size of the model being printed and the way it is printed.  But to provide a guideline: A typical cell phone cover will take about 12cm^3 of material, so you will be able to print 60 cell phone covers from a 1kg spool of filament and will take 2 hours to print one cover (depending on your settings).

What does the 12V Power Supply Kit include?

The 12V Power Supply Kit includes a 12V, 18A Switch Mode Power Supply capable of powering your 3D Printer as well as the mounting hardware, cables and connectors required for assembly.

Can I upgrade my printer at a later stage?

Yes, the printer is designed in a modular way with future upgrades in mind.  All the upgrades we release on the printer are compatible with all the printers we have sold in the past, so there is not a chance you will be left behind with old technology.

  1. Awesome Printer

Posted by Charl on 10th Dec 2015

This printer is definitely worth the price you pay for it. Honestly I wasn't expecting much from a printer that costs so little but I am very happy with my purchase.

Paul gives great customer service and I believe that is what makes his printers even more awesome.

If you are looking to buy a printer and learn from it then you won't go wrong with 3D Printing Store.

Thanks for all the help Paul.

  2. Excellent printer and service.

Posted by Peter on 24th Nov 2015

I've had it for 2 weeks now and have found no problems. Everything arrived as promised. I followed the videos and it went together perfectly. Some of the laser cut plastic needed a little persuasion and light filing but not anything to write home about. It did take take 2 full days to commission. After that it has worked flawlessly.

The support from Paul has been excellent.

My setup: The Prusa I3, a modified ATX power supply and a cheap 7" Android tablet running "GCodePrintr" plugged into the Arduino Mega.
I use 123D Design and Slic3r to design and generate gcode files for printing.

The steepest learning curve has been the design software. Watch the tutorials and take a deep breath.

  3. Great Service & Great Product

Posted by Alex Venter on 11th Nov 2015

I bought this printer after considering other RSA online kits, and is very happy with my choice!. The service was excellent, and the after sales service (when I goofed-up) even better.

    I would recommend it!!

  4. Complete kit, great support

Posted by Andre on 24th Aug 2015

It took me a while to decide if I should get a kit, or source the parts myself (possibly for cheaper), but in the end I was glad I chose the kit.

The support provided by Paul allowed me to get up and running quickly, something I would not have been able to do had I sourced the parts myself.

Everything was packed and labeled very neatly.

I started assembly on a Saturday morning and did my first print on Sunday evening.

    Print quality was amazing.

I had a few issues with the Z axis threaded rods sticking, but Paul helped me sort that out.

  5. Awesome Printer and Service

Posted by Jarod on 20th Aug 2015

As said in the headline, the printer kit is awesome, I am still assembling it however the parts seem high quality and well made. Paul is extremely helpful and the service I recieved from 3Dprintingstore.co.za was brilliant. I will not hesitate to recommend this company or this printer to others.

  6. Great Printer and service

Posted by Hugh on 12th Aug 2015

First time using a 3d printer very easy to put together with the help of the videos, very fun to use. 10/10 Im very happy with the printer.

  7. The best service by far

Posted by Robby on 4th Aug 2015

Well!! The service that i received from Paul and the 3dprintingstore was nothing short of amazing and fantastic. In my enthusiasm to build my printer , I overtightened and cracked the support on my hothead. I sent Paul and email and he offered to replace it and I just have to pay the courier price....

Where in South Africa or the world do you get service like this. Its unbelievable. If you are thinking of buying anything from Paul, don't hesitate, the man is very dedicated and you will see this with the training video and the quality of the printer.

There where the odd little snags like the treaded bar having to be sanded and cleaned but this was just part of the fun. Again all I can say is that you canty go wrong with this printer and the service.

    -Robby

  8. Awesome!

Posted by Jd on 7th Jul 2015

Great product, easy to assemble with the help of the video clips, very thorough with every detail.

Threaded rods could have been better finished at the ends, but nothing a little file couldn't fix.

Very satisfied with this printer, expected it to be a bad choice if you look at the price but I would definitely recommend this printer to anyone.

    Thanx Paul

  9. Great Printer

Posted by Unknown on 2nd Jul 2015

This kit took some time to get up and going. Printing was a hassle with my system (Windows 7 64-bit) and I finally installed a virtual PC with windows XP and also tested with windows 7 32-bit. This solved all issues with connecting to the printer. Think some ware a windows update killed the connection or 64-bit is not the best option (will test later on with a clean 64-bit installation), so if any issues, try a clean copy of windows or a virtual installation of windows.

The heat bed was a bit on the light side (Wattage) but due 3D Printing store.co.za's excellent after sale support was sorted out, so thanks guys for your assistance.

  10. Local is lekka!

Posted by Peter B on 21st Apr 2015

My first 3d printer, and I am very happy. Its good to buy from a local supplier, especially one who has been as thorough as this. The videos are excellent and detailed, and the after sales support is more than excellent.

It is not too easy to assemble, and a lot of care is needed, for example in how to route the wiring to avoid snagging. I found it best to assemble it all before doing the wiring soldering, so that the lengths can be made just right. Check the wires reach at full height, and don't snag for all positions of the bed and extruder.

Its worth taking it very slowly during assembly - some parts needed a bit of TLC, like the thread on the Z rods which at first jammed the nuts (I used a stainless steels nut to cut away the burrs), and some of the laser cut parts needed to be scraped with a knife to remove rough edges before they would fit well. Particular care is needed when clamping the linear bearings, not to crack the plates like I did (Paul just replaced the parts I broke at no charge).

Be warned - watching your printer work is addictive, and can lead to sleep deprivation!
