 Product Description

The MKS Gen-L V2.1 Controller Board is designed by Makerbase and is a combination of the Arduino Mega 2560 and the RAMPS 1.4 board in a smaller and more cost effective package than the MKS Gen 1.4 controller board.  The V2.1 has also been updated to control the Trinamic TMC2208 and TMC2100 stepper drivers in UART mode and even the TMC2130 driver in SPI mode.  It has the same capability as the RAMPS board with the following advantages:  It can run from 12 - 24V for those high power applications, it consists of a single board with improved thermal control, it has an improved USB controller and the connector for the screen is already on the board.

  • Board size: 110mm x 84mm
  • Weight: 80 gram
  • Voltage supply: 12 - 24V
  • Stepper drivers: Up to 5 x A4988, DVR8825, TMC2208, TMC2100, TMC2130 drivers (not included)
  • Hot ends: Maximum 2
  • Heated bed: Yes

  1. Works great (eventually :))

Posted by Carel Prinsloo on 26th Aug 2019

I initially had my doubts about this board since it was a lot cheaper than the other options. I damaged my original Melzi board by soldering in a new hot-end thermistor while it was powered up, and I was looking for a replacement that would provide the option of a dual hot-end at a later stage.

I am a relative novice to both 3D printing and electronics, but I found it easy to do the wiring part. The pins are clearly marked and if you follow one of the many online guides, it all works out fine.

It is with the firmware that the trouble started! Whichever board you choose to use, this is not a job for a novice (like me). I first tried loading Marlin, but found it to be far above my level of expertise. Finding the correct parameters in the configuration.h file was like looking for a needle in a haystack. I then tried Repetier and the autoconfigure tool made it much easier for me to make sense. I can really recommend it for new entrants to this hobby. Find it here:

It now works like a charm. There are a few small tuning adjustments I still want to make, but that will come over time. The Repetier forum is a useful resource in fine-tuning.

Overall, I am extremely happy with this controller board.

  2. Great Mega + Ramps replacement

Posted by Jason C on 18th Jan 2018

The MKS Gen L is a great single board replacement for the RAMPS and Arduino Mega combo.
The CPU connections are the same as the RAMPS, and Marlin includes the definition for this motherboard type.
    Take note:
    1. Some of the un-keyed connections are flipped (for eg pin one is bottom left instead of top right as on the RAMPS), please double check.
    2. The LCD EXP ports are mirrored (or the connector is solderd on the wrong way). The connectors key (and pin 1) did not agree with my RRD LCD cables, therefore also double check before connecting.
