    ...i found that getting the rods inserted at the right depth for it to catch the rod and hold it is a mission, but I am not known for being all that good with these things.

    The screws on mine have stripped after some abuse from my side but i still think it's a good and worthwhile addition to a printer.

    I'm using these to couple my Z motors to a 5mm threaded rod.

    The coupler is manufactured very well and it's a great price, but there's a few things you need to watch out for when mounting them.

    The coupler I received was slightly different than the one in the picture. In mine the screws to tighten it does not go through the coupler to rest on the rod. Instead, the coupler has a slit cut out and screw that tightens and narrows the end of the coupler.

    My 5mm threaded rods were not actually 5mm, they were slightly smaller, and even with the tightening screw at it's maximum, the coupler could not grip the rod. Paul suggested I use some aluminium tape wrapped around the rod, which worked great.

    The coupler also tends to compress if you place weight on it. If your Z motors are at the bottom, then the X carriage weight will be transferred to the coupler. If there is a gap between the motor shaft and the threaded rod inside the coupler, then it will compress. If you push the shaft and the threaded rod against each other in the coupler, then you reduce the amount if available flex the coupler provides.

    To overcome this I used a steel ball bearing as a spacer inside the coupler. This way there is no space for the coupler to compress and the motor shaft and rod can flex around the ball.

    And finally, these couplers obviously take up more space than a tube coupler, so check if you have enough space to mount it. In my case the X carriage rests just a millimeter above the coupler when Z is homed.

    I have to say I tried several home made designs to connect the motors to the threaded rod, none worked, this coupler really made life so much easier. Very good quality and it takes all the wobble out if the rods as well

    I ordered the couplers because I found that the threaded rod connected to the z-axis stepper motor kept winding out from the rubber hose couplers. The package arrived speedily as usual. Upon receiving the package it was securely wrapped as always. On fitting the couplers, I found that had to sand down the laser cut perspex parts to virtually upto the endstop switch. After fitting the parts, my problem with the threaded rod came to an end. My z-axis is more stable and both stepper motors are doing their part. I recommend this part to anyone building their prusa reprap. The price from 3d printing store cannot be beaten unless you import it yourself. Not sure the hassle of importing is worth the possible saving.

  6. Z leadscrew couplings

    Used these on NEMA 17 steppers, with M5 threaded rod. Beautifully made, accurate. Suggest only using them if you have the z leadscrews supported with bearings at each end, as they tend to open up if the X carriage is hanging on the leadscrews.
